If you set out to explore where the place name Godenholt comes from, you quickly immerse yourself in the exciting, old mythological story that even inspired Hollywood to create a multi-part saga. There it is Anthony Hopkins, who plays the god father Odin, who, one-eyed but wise, directs the story in Asgaard and besides his family also has ravens around him.
In South Germanic language it is called Odin Wotan or Wodan. We know from medieval documents that today's Godensholt was called "Wodansholte", so it can be assumed that a sacred forest was once dedicated to the god Wodan at this old, Stone Age settlement of the Apen community. The sound shift from W to G is not uncommon in the development of our language, it can also be found in the word "Holte" (wood) to "forest".
Who was this Odin / Wotan now? As the father of gods, he sacrificed one eye in order to gain the ability to see the future. He was accompanied by his two ravens, who tell him what they hear and see and made Odin / Wotan so almost omniscient. Mythology gave him many, even contradicting, qualities and abilities.
The imposing, monumental size of Jörg Ridderbusch's work of almost 6 meters alludes to his importance as the father of gods. In general, the figure of Odin / Wodan as a tree is an indication of his importance as the god of the forest. In its foliage one discovers the two divine ravens and a spear, which is the symbol of the hunt, which is also connected to the god.
But the figure does not stop in the mystical past, but moves the history of the place into the present: Ridderbusch chose the oak characteristic of the Ammerland as the tree and at the base of its trunk there are various symbols that represent the 12 Godensholt associations and thus as The basis for the solidarity of the residents and the strength of this part of the community should be made clear. Go on a search for the symbols and identify the bazaar circle, the rifle club, the "Klüterdeerns" and the "Klüterjungs", the local citizens' association, the hunting horn blowers, the FC Godensholt, the SoVD, the fire brigade, the MC "Altöl", the Choir "Sangeslust" and the Boßelverein "Dree Steen".
