The church from the 13th century is dedicated to St. Nicholas, who is venerated as the patron saint of seafarers. This shows Apen's former importance as a shipping and trading center. The elevated position of the church on a heaped up river also has something to do with the abundance of water in the area, which was quickly threatened by flooding. In front of the building, as is customary for the region, there is a free-standing bell tower from the 15th century The pulpit, which was made around 1625 by the sculptor Ludwig Münstermann, belongs to the furnishings.
