The Ammerland landscape has always been shaped by windmills and water mills. At the heyday of the mills at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, 47 mills still existed, nine of which are still functional and can be visited today. The 47-kilometer route leads to six Ammerland mills, which have been preserved for posterity with great voluntary commitment. The course of the route leads through the most beautiful moorland and pastureland with varied and winding passages and is almost entirely paved.
Highlights RIGHT AND LEFT OF THE ROUTE
- The highlights on the route are the eponymous mills. The windmill in the open-air museum in Bad Zwischenahn is a two-story Dutch gallery. It dates from 1811.
- The Ekerner Mühle is also a two-story gallery dutch.
- Querensteder Mühle: This mill is a three-story gallery Dutchman with a compass rose. The wind rose automatically turns the mill cap into the wind.
- The Wallholländer Westerscheps was built in 1888. At the beginning, it was ground with wind power. In 1908 the grinding process was also operated by a steam engine.
- The first gallery Dutch windmill Westerscheps was built in 1799, but burned down in 1827. A new mill was built at this point in 1830.
- Howiek watermill was built in 1608. The half-timbered building with a riding and tiled roof is striking. The drive took place by means of an undershot water wheel.
