The Ammerland wall hedges are valuable components of the cultural landscape. They shape the Ammerland park landscape and run through the land, which is intensively used by people, like lifelines. Wall hedges were originally created as living fences and to demarcate property. They provide a habitat to a large extent for wild animal and plant species. You can get an idea of this for yourself on this approximately 34-kilometer route.
Highlights:
- The moors to the east: Hankhauser-, Barghorner-, Loyer- and Ipwegermoor - the entire eastern section of the route is characterized by beautiful moorland. The routes are paved and lead along wonderful, shady avenues to Wahnbek.
- Landschaftsfenster "Landscape window" Wallhecken (Wemkendorf): The observation tower "Tower of a Poet" stands in the middle of wall hedges and offers a view of the characteristic landscape of Wiefelstede. As former border markings, the wall hedges shape the Ammerland park landscape in a very special way.
- Rastede Castle was the residence of the Counts and Grand Dukes of the Oldenburg family for a long time and is still owned by the family today. The building is exemplary of the Oldenburg classicism, which was brought here by Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig and is at the same time the most important secular building in the Ammerland. The history of Rastede Castle Park can be traced back to the time of the medieval monastery forest. After a checkered history, the Rastede summer residence began with the future Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig.
- Landschaftsfenster Geestrand "landscape window": From the tower you look towards the Wesermarsch. The height difference of up to 20 meters in height between the Ammerländer Geest and the Weser marshes can be experienced in an impressive way.
